Safari Suites in Shatti al Qurum, Muscat Governant, Sultanate of Oman

19-22 February 2015

I booked this for us because I used to live in Muscat and I recognized the place from its photographs on Agoda.com. I knew what it had going for it from its setting and I liked that breakfast was included, but eating there is not what was going for it.

The official photos of the breakfast looked like a nice setting. The attendants were always showing rugby on TV during mealtime, though one of them was happy to cook eggs for us which was the freshest aspect of the breakfast. OK, maybe you want to watch rugby with breakfast, no lifestyle offense intended. Also, that the coffee in the pot was dark – that was good, too.  But just look inside and be sad at the food whose Sterno was always unlit:

The room was very spacious and clean, though one may find the door locks distasteful. I've noticed these door locks are typical in the Middle East and maybe other places for all I know. The door can only be locked with a key, so if one of you leaves the key must either be left or you lock the other person in the room and then they are trapped. Leaving the key in the lock when in the room should prevent someone outside from using another key to open the door. Anyway, I'm not a fan.

Two bottles of water were replenished daily. The kitchen also had two of everything, with extra cutting knives, but the bedroom had only one robe and one pair of slippers. The bathroom gave us what we needed. The WiFi worked, too. So, not bad at all, and it gets better.

Swimming in the pool at the Grand Hyatt Muscat next door – yes, this will make you happy, so use it as if you were a Grand Hyatt guest. Or, just take their towels (bring your Safari key) and go out to the lawn at the beach and swim in the ocean. Unfortunately, no one can do anything about the invisible jellyfish-like creatures that may sting you as you wade into the friendly Arabian Sea coast.

The beach setting and the pool sharing are what make this property. Enjoy that, but also use that kitchen.
